Hmong Traditions – Men & Young Boys
In a traditional Hmong household the Men and young boys would plant and harvest the crops. Use crossbows to hunt for food as well as protect their families. The fathers’ responsibility is to provide for the safety and security of his family as well as nurturing their spiritual welfare. In a traditional household the husbands have authority over their wives and make all the major decisions regarding their family affairs. Back in Laos, the men were the sole and acknowledged leaders of their families. But here in America, the men will face many challenges in a society that believes in an equal voice for women and greater freedom of choice for children. The men would have to adjust and will need to find a balance between the new and traditional roles while living in America.
